More Skills to improve your Reading score

Moving forward towards our objective of improving Reading score and achieving high in the Reading module of IELTS, I Arunlata is again here with Achievers 9 Bands. Achievers 9 Bands is regularly serving students to improve IELTS band score.

Let’s come to some specific skills to improve our scores. Today I will emphasize more on Reading

Reading-- Match/choose the correct headings

  • In IELTS reading test, the students may be asked to match headings to sections of text. These type of questions tests your ability to understand the main idea of each paragraph.
  • Headings are short sentences that summarize the information of a paragraph. You have to pick one that sums up best.

In this question, you will be given 5 to 7 headings and asked to match each paragraph in the reading text to one heading. Generally, numbers of headings are more than paragraphs.

Problems:

 1) In some of the cases, provided time is found less.

 2) You get indulged in matching the words from the heading to a word in the text.

 3) Some headings may appear to have the same meaning.

 4) Sometimes students just guess the main idea.

 5) Answers are not in the same order as the text.

Tips:

 1) If this question is in the test, you should try to do it first.

 2) You have not to look at the headings first. This will automatically make you look for specific words in the text rather than the main idea.

 3) You have to read at least first two sentences and last two sentences of each paragraph to understand the general meaning and try to sum up its idea being conveyed.

 4) You have to look at the headings while selecting keywords.

 5) Match any heading of which you are sure.

 6) If you find any confusion i.e. two or more headings are appearing same to you then write them beside the paragraph and establish if there are any synonyms in the paragraph to keywords in the headings.

 7) If you are still unable to pick one, move ahead and do the next one. The answer will often reveal itself later.

 8) Don't read too quickly. You would not be able to understand most of the text and commit mistakes. It would be better if you do this a little slower and actually understand what it is in front of you.

Here, I have given you a practice test based on Choose the suitable heading

Choose the correct heading for section A from the list of headings below.

List of headings:

 1) Greenberg’s analysis of the dental and linguistic evidence

 2) Developments in the methods used to study early population movements.

 3) Dental evidence

SECTION A: There are two kinds of research that have thrown some light on the origins of the Native American population; they involve the study of teeth and of languages. The biological anthropologist Christy Turner is an expert in the analysis of changing physical characteristics in human teeth. He argues that both crowns and roots have a high genetic component, minimally affected by environment and other factors. Studies carried out by Turner of many thousands of new and old world specimens both ancient and modern, suggest that the majority of prehistoric American are Northern Asian populations by the crown and root traits such as incisor shoveling, single rooted upper first premolars and triple rooted lower first molars.

So dear all, I hope the concepts are quite clear to you but you need to practice more and more in order to perform the best in your upcoming test.
