WAY TO TASK 2, ESSAY WRITING FOR ACADEMICS AND GENERAL TRAINING

Moving forward towards our objective of improving Writing score and achieving high in the writing module of IELTS, I Arunlata is again here with Achievers 9 Bands. Achievers 9 Bands is regularly serving students to improve IELTS band score.

Let’s come to some specific skills to improve our scores. Today I will emphasize more on Essay Writing in IELTS, Task-2 [Academic / General] IELTS task 2 is made for finding out your ability to express your opinion on a very mundane topic. However, it is sometimes difficult for students to understand the topic before they write.

In the following steps, I would like to demonstrate how candidate appearing for IELTS exam should go with the topic question.

Understanding

It's extremely important to know the question before writing. A question should be read fully, for example, every task has a background and the main question, here the task of the candidate is to read both of them and link it with the thoughts which first come in his head. I suggest reading the question at least 2 to 3 times to get an overview of what ideas can be included in the essay.

Brainstorming

The next step of writing is brainstorming; this is to find out as what ideas would suit to the topic and how they relate to both the background and the main question. While brainstorming you can also look for examples from your personal experience or knowledge to be included in the essay because generally, students forget to mention examples in there completed essay format.  Obviously, examiners do not consider essay without examples.  Brainstorming them can save you lots of bands.

Planning

The third step of essay writing is planning. It is a very crucial test thus effective planning remains very important to understand yet many students do not like to plan and write a framework of how they are going to represent their ideas.  Yet jotting down thoughts on the question paper can help you support your view of the argument. I suggest spending at least 5 to 6 minutes on writing a rough framework of your desired essay.

Writing

The next step of writing an essay is writing your part carefully. Choose the idea you are going to explain with all supporting statements that since it is an important factor that an examiner would consider.

Checking

Though generally ignored due to time constraint or tiredness, checking is an important part of writing a perfect essay. This helps you to eliminate some mistakes that you have done along the way, for example, spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.  Thus I suggest you save time to finally read your essay and self-correct out some errors which otherwise can hinder the flow of the reader rendering low bands.

Points to remember

The Rater requires you to work according to roughly four parameters

Task response

Here the examiner accesses you according to task achievement and the position you have taken with relevant and extended supporting ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion

This part involves developing Cohesion that flows in the ideas so that it does not attract any attention of the Reader. It also includes managing paragraphing skillfully

Lexical resource

This part involves using a wide range of vocabulary avoiding repetition in a natural and controlled manner. (Use of a lot of idioms have been ruled out by why IELTS format)

Grammatical range and accuracy

The grammatical range includes using a variety of sentence structure like Complex and compound sentences and avoiding mistakes like in Grammar or punctuation.  A lot of grammatical mistakes, questions the intelligibility of your report.

So dear all, I hope the concepts are quite clear to you but you need to practice more and more in order to perform the best in your upcoming test.
