More Skills to improve your Reading score

Moving forward towards our objective of improving Reading score and achieving high in Reading module of IELTS, I Arunlata is again here with Achievers 9 Bands. Achievers 9 Bands is regularly serving students to improve IELTS band score.

Let’s come to some specific skills to improve our scores. Today I will emphasize more on Reading

READING - SUMMARY COMPLETION

  • In IELTS reading test, you will be given a summary of information from the text and there will be some gaps in that summary.
  • You will either be given a list of words to fill the gaps with or asked to find the answers in the reading text and you need to insert them.
  • There will be more words in the list than required to fill the gaps.
  • All of the information contained in the summary, will also be contained in the reading text, but in the IELTS Test, there can be synonyms and paraphrasing. So don't expect the same words.

Tips: 1)   You should predict the answers before you look at the options or the text. This will     help you spot the correct answer.

 2) Your answer must be grammatically correct. You may need to fill with a noun, adjective, verb or adverb. .

 3)  You should look for paraphrases or synonyms in the text rather than words that directly match.

  4) You are advised not to spend too much time on one question. Mark what you think it might be and move on. Focusing on easier answers is a better use of time.

 5)  You should follow the order of the questions so that you could easily find answers order vise.

  6)  If there is a list of words, think about the ones that can't be the answer because of meaning or grammar and eliminate them.

Here is a practice for you

Complete the summary using the list of words below. Write the correct letter, A- H in boxes of Q 7-10 on your answer sheet.

Ants as farmers

Ants have sophisticated methods of farming, including herding livestock and growing    crops, which are in many ways similar to those used in human agriculture. The ants cultivate a large number of different species of edible fungi which convert (7) --------into a form which they can digest. They use their own natural 8) --------as weed -killers and also use unwanted materials as (9) --------. Genetic analysis shows they constantly upgrade these fungi by developing new spices and by (10) -------species with neighboring ant colonies.

READING -- MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS

In both Academics and General Training papers, you are likely to be asked Multiple Choice Questions.

  • You will have simply to choose the correct answer from a list of possible choices.

  • When you do this, it will seem like two or three of the options could be the correct answer and you therefore must read in much more detail to find the specific information that gives you the correct answer.

TIPS:

         1) You have to read the questions and then the text related to them.

 2) You will easily eliminate 2 of the four answers and this leaves you with two choices. Think about the difference in meaning between two choices and this will help you get the correct answer.

 3) After that, still if you are not able to find the difference, you can rephrase them in your own words.

 4) If you are running out of the time and don't know the answers, have a guess  as there is no negative marking in IELTS, moreover, it can be a right one.

5) You should not get trapped by the   examiner’s distracters especially keywords.

6) You need not to understand each and every word of the text.

 7)  You should try to predict the answer before reading the text.

 8) If you are going to decide the answer, carefully read the questions and then accordingly make your final decision.

 9) You should try to find the answers while following the same order of the text.

Passage: In general, it is plausible to suppose that we should prefer peace and quiet to noise. And yet most of us have had the experience of having to adjust to sleeping in the mountains or the country side because it was initially 'too quiet', an experience that suggests that humans are capable of adapting to a wide range of noise levels. For example, Glass and Singer exposed people to short bursts of very loud noise and then measured their ability to work out problems and their physiological reactions to the noise. The noise was quite disruptive at first, but after about four minutes the subjects were doing just as well on their tasks as control subjects who were not exposed to noise. Their physiological arousal also declined quickly to the same levels as those of the control subjects.

Choose and write the correct letter A, B, C OR D.

Q: The writer suggests that people may have difficulty sleeping in the mountains because

  1. a) Human do not prefer peace and quiet to noise.
  2. b) They may be exposed to short bursts of very strange sounds
  3. c) Human prefers to hear a certain amount of noise while they sleep.
  4. d) They may have adapted to a higher noise level in the city.

So dear all, I hope the concepts are quite clear to you but you need to practice more and more in order to perform the best in your upcoming test.
